Best Colored Pencils For Coloring Books

Best Colored Pencils For Coloring Books – Adult coloring books are obviously the shizz, so I’ve tested several coloring tools to find out which ones work best. The paper quality seems to be getting better, at least in the coloring books I’ve picked up lately, so that opens up your options.

Copiers are expensive and run on most of the coloring book page. Plus they smell great. Thumbs down.

I know Sharpies are useful, and you always have them around the house. BUT, just like their more expensive Copic counterpart, they go through the paper and smell a little. (Unless you like the smell of Sharpies, in which case I say put the marker down and get some fresh air). Thumbs down.

If you use these colored pencils dry, they work very well. They are soft, so they cover and blend well. But if you wet them down to make them look vibrant and strong, they pass through the paper. It’s not like Copic or Sharpies, but still…no big.

I love pencils, I do. Except for the Sharpies. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate Sharpies – I always do – they’re not great for coloring. Sharpie pencils have a very fine tip and appear both wet and dry in some way. So they don’t cover the paper well and tend to bleed. Thumbs down.

You will be there for days, head bent over your coloring book, hump starting to form on your back, just trying to color with these gel pens. The ink doesn’t flow freely and the tip is too small! They can be good if you have small detailed areas to get into, but otherwise I would avoid them. Thumbs down.

This is a GREAT nibble pen. If you have a large area to cover, great. But if you’re trying to create the fine details required in most adult coloring books, forget it. Amazingly, it didn’t stick to the paper, despite the thick, opaque layer of paint!

I like the variety of colors that Liquitex Paint Pens come in, but they can be watery and start to bleed a little on the page if I paint a large area with them. They are also very broad-tipped pencils, so they are not good for finer details.

Metallic Sharpie ink is more opaque than its colored counterparts and doesn’t seem to bleed onto the paper at all, unless you rub a lot. Thumbs up. However, it will cover your dark lines. So you have to be very careful, or you don’t care too much when the shapes start to meet.

This metal gel pen is beautiful. The ink glides on the paper, gives good coverage to the fine nib and doesn’t bleed onto the paper! Thumbs up.

These pencils have very fine nibs, but the vibrancy and range of colors they offer is outstanding, and they won’t bleed onto your paper. So I would definitely recommend them for those books with more details. Thumbs up.

I love, love, love this pen. It has a smaller tip than its Liquitex counterpart (still slightly larger than a Sharpie), and the vibrant color is very opaque and glides on the paper. Best of all, it doesn’t go on paper! in a wonderful way! Thumbs up!

For expensive colored pencils, these weren’t bad at all. They blended well, didn’t have too much flavor, and best of all, they smelled great! Thumbs up.

I found the Prismacolor pencils to be thin and difficult to blend, which is unusual for a water pencil. They are usually very soft. Having said that, you can wet them and mix the paint, and as long as you don’t mess with the water, nothing will leak. Thumbs up.

Derwent pencils are nice and soft, they blend and cover well, and with a little water you can spread them out and make more without bleeding on the page. Thumbs up.

Surprisingly, the watercolors were very beautiful. It was easy to fill in small spaces with a fine brush, and as long as you’re not happy with the splatter and use a lot of water, they didn’t go through the paper! Thumbs up.

Oh, ahh. Faber Castell’s markers were very popular. They have a brush tip so you can easily get into small cracks and paint large areas quickly. They come in tons of colors, they don’t smell, and unless you’re really promiscuous (in which case I recommend getting an adult to show you how to hold the marker properly) they won’t go through the paper. We have a winner folks!

Here is the front and back of my test page. You can see that pencil sharpeners and Copic pencils go the best, followed by Inkense pencils when wet.

Good news? I choose them based on actual testing I’ve done myself! None of these brands paid me or sent me anything for free. This is my 100% honest opinion.

I own all of these pencil sets (and many more) and have tested them all. Of the colored pencils I tried, these were my top five picks. These are my thoughts, and here is my ranking from 1 to 5.

Advantages: These colored pencils for adults have a great color range; no sharpening required, just twist! The color is applied smoothly and like wax, somewhere between crayon and pencil. I love that feeling.

Best Colored Pencils For Coloring Books

Cons: No color stickers! You don’t think color labeling is important until you have it – some of the colors look the same so it was hard for me to remember what I used.

Overall: I love these pens. I’ll be honest – I like two big things about them: 1) how the paint works on the paper and how smooth it is and 2) how you don’t have to sharpen it.

Having said that, sometimes it’s hard to get solid advice from them about details. But for me, if you want a good set at a good price, this is a great choice.

(about $3 to start) – this set includes 24 colored pencils; I believe this is the only size set you can buy from them.

Advantages: The pencil tube is hexagonal which makes it easy to hold; the colors work well and are waxy just the way I like them; they combine easily.

Cons: The worst thing I can say is that there aren’t enough colors! I wish Pentel made bigger sets.

I like it better than the cheaper sets I’ve tried – I’m just sad I can’t find it in a wider range of colors because this would be my set!
