How To Frost Cupcakes With A Frosting Swirl (easy Step By Step)
Here’s a quick and very honest backstory. I’ve never felt super talented at decorating cakes and cupcakes because it’s so intimidating. Do you feel the same way? Bored with my usual swirl and knife-swipe frosting look, I started playing around with different piping tips. When I started using these new tips, my confidence shot up and, as it turns out, I was delighted with how easy it was to make a beautifully decorated confection.
Two years ago, I would have laughed if someone had asked me to make a cupcake like this:
How To Swirl Icing On A Cupcake
But I just got into it and had a lot of fun in the process and you can too!
Piping tips can seem intimidating, so let’s break it all down in this simple Piping Tips 101 course. It takes a little practice, some visual guidance, and a really reliable frosting recipe like my healthy creamy vanilla buttercream, or this not-so-sweet whipped frosting. I turn to the following 5 tips, each one creates a completely different look, so it’s a great starter collection (and these tips won’t break the bank—they’re all inexpensive.)
I make two looks with Wilton 1M This is the tip I use and recommend for frosting two-tone roses, but it’s also a tip for making soft-serve-looking slashes, as seen in the video tutorial above.
How To Frost Cupcakes
Wilton 1M is a classic piping tip and the buttercream rose is the main decoration. Start from the center and pipe a flat swirl you can see the beautiful rose decoration on this 3 inch birthday cake you can also make two tons of frosting roses they are very pretty and it’s fun to play with different colors and to further demonstrate the Versatility of Wilton 1M, you can also use it to make hydrangea cupcakes! This is a piping tip that I always recommend as a gift for a baker, and we included it on my Best Gifts for Bakers page. 🙂
The Wilton 1M can also produce a topping that resembles soft serve ice cream starting from the center and slowly moving around creating a high spiral above itself. The Ateco 849 pipe tip (listed below) is also slightly wider, but produces a similar appearance. I used a Wilton 1M to pipe the piping on the chocolate cupcakes.
Wilton 8B is my all time favorite it is very easy to use but creates a beautiful decoration you can see I used it on the White Chocolate Strawberry Cupcakes and the Chai Latte Cupcakes. Start from the center and move upwards
How To Pipe The Perfect Cupcake
Ateco 849 is a wide pipe tip you can make rose or a soft-serve slot like the Wilton 1m above. (Since the top is wide, the rose and swirl will be wider/bigger. You can see a wide long swirl using Ateco 849 on this yellow cupcake and this peanut butter cupcake.) Or make a super easy ruffle look as you can see. Can next picture you can even see the crunchy look on my pistachio cupcakes! Just press the top in the center and lift while pushing the fries
Wilton 12 is a small round tip since it doesn’t have a distinct edge, I love using this tip for silky/thin/creamy frosting like salted caramel frosting and cream cheese frosting. You can see an example of this on my Lemon Cupcakes with Blackberry Cream Cheese Frosting.
The Ateco 808 is also a round tip, but it is much larger than the Wilton 12. Its decoration looks like a big fluffy cloud! You can see an example of this on the Carrot Cake Cupcakes and the Cookie Dough Cupcakes starting in the center and moving up
Cream Cheese Frosting Recipe
Take reusable or disposable whichever you prefer reusable piping bags are very easy to clean whatever you use I recommend the 16 inch size whether you are providing a lot of piping decoration or even just a little it is a great size
Filling a piping bag with creamy frosting without making a mess can be quite difficult! My trick is to use a larger cup that fits the piping bag with a piping tip, and place it in a large cup, folding the tip of the piping bag around the rim of the cup. Watch how to do this in my two-tone frosting rose video
Now that you’re fully equipped with this Pipe Tips 101 guide, walk away with some freebies like a boss.
Rainbow Swirl Frosting
These piping tips work perfectly for other frostings like Swiss Meringue Buttercream, Chocolate Buttercream, Not So Sweet Whipped Cream, and my Whipped Whipped Cream recipe.
This is my favorite vanilla buttercream This is the perfect vanilla frosting that is simple, creamy and smooth and tastes incredible on top of vanilla cupcakes!
