“Many believe that the use of petrochemicals, hydrocarbon derivatives and coal tar in artificial food colors can cause these disorders. Food colors are also believed to adversely affect the immune system and male fertility. Asthma and allergies.” (first thought)

Let’s be honest. The fact that most commercial food colorings have a number in their name is somewhat concerning. Who Really Considers Food “FD&C Blue 1”? There are certainly good reasons to avoid eating processed food coloring in your diet.

Fortunately, natural food coloring options are not only natural, but offer even more health benefits. The colors in our vegan muffins come from matcha, beetroot, acai and charcoal. They are 100% natural ingredients that are considered superfoods.

Each of these beautiful vegan frosting colors starts with our original dairy-free buttercream recipe. Like classic buttercream, it whips up easily in an electric mixer. Of course, you can also do it by hand.

And our vegan buttercream recipe only has 5 ingredients, including salt. There are actually quite a few reasons to buy store-bought ice cream. But if you’re in a serious time crunch, we love Simple Mills Vanilla Frosting.

Our beautiful purple cupcakes are colored with acai powder. Açai has been enjoying a hot moment in the United States for the past few years. But it is actually a berry native to South America, especially Brazil.

Fresh, looks like blueberries. Although we mainly ship acai powder and frozen concentrate here, Brazilians have been eating fresh acai berries for centuries.

Acai is full of antioxidants and fiber. In fact, it is one of the most antioxidant fruits in the world. We always use acai powder for smoothies and smoothie bowls.

A little goes a long way. It is slightly sour and always provides the most beautiful purple shade. That’s why mixing just two tablespoons into your vegan buttercream will give you a bright, vibrant purple frosting.

The acai powder will leave some purple flecks in the frosting which will also give it a wonderful texture. I love the heather look of these gluten free muffins.

We cannot make natural vegan food coloring without including green in our palate. It is one of the most common natural dyes and we are always told to eat more of it 🙂

Matcha is a concentrated green tea powder. Again, a little goes a long way. Its taste can be a bit more polarizing than acai. Some call it grass. And that’s why we only use 2 teaspoons to color our buttercream. It’s amazing how far you get when you start mixing.

We also added a bit of cinnamon to make sure none of the spicy grass flavor came out. Cinnamon will not affect the color at all. Instead, it enhances the flavor of your vanilla buttercream.

If you haven’t tried matcha before, I highly recommend trying a homemade matcha latte with your leftover powder. A little almond milk, vanilla and your choice of sweetener is a delicious and warming alternative to coffee.

Black food coloring isn’t even in the regular palettes you find at the grocery store. And why not? It makes a statement like a dark chocolate cupcake. And now that Halloween is coming, it’s time to start playing with black food.

We achieved this deep dark color with charcoal powder. This may come as a surprise. But yes, charcoal powder is 100% edible and actually healthy. Activated charcoal is a digestible form.

Natural charcoal attracts and absorbs impurities. In small amounts, it is believed to help reduce toxins in the body. Many people also use it to clean their teeth! Hey, if it can remove stomach toxins, why not use it as a spot remover for your dogs?

And last but not least, our natural orange food coloring. It has a few more ingredients than others, but the resulting shade is very useful.

Beet juice provides most of the color. But since we didn’t want to go red, we also added a touch of turmeric. Turmeric is a powerful anti-inflammatory food. And if you cook it, you can also tell how much yellow/orange things love to stain. We used that to our advantage.

Again, since no one wants to bite into a homemade vegan muffin and not taste beets or turmeric, we called for a few extra ingredients. The cinnamon overpowers any spice flavor in the turmeric. And a little extra vanilla extract ensures you get a taste like vanilla buttercream, not beetroot.

We’re in the Halloween spirit, so we dyed buttercream frosting with vibrant natural food coloring for spooky cupcakes. We used our vanilla cake recipe and our classic chocolate cupcake recipe.
