Can I Use Food Coloring To Dye Clothes – Learn TO DYE WITHOUT CHEMICALS Teach your kids how to cut a tie with food coloring.
My girls have been wanting to try their hand at tie-dyeing for a while now, so we thought why not make red, white and blue tie-dye shirts for the 4th of July. But there was a small problem, we were pressed for time and I had never tried to paint.
Can I Use Food Coloring To Dye Clothes
After searching Pinterest for quick tie cutting techniques, we found TONS of tutorials. There were especially ones that used caramel coloring, and I thought that would be the perfect starting point for us since we’d never done that before.
How Natural Dyes Are Better Than Synthetic Dyes
I’m actually so glad we tried this food coloring method for the first time. I must add that food coloring does not remain in the fabric after washing. There are steps we can take to keep it permanent. However, I wanted their shirts to be freshly laundered so they could try different folding techniques and not have a million tie-dyed shirts in their closets.

First, you want to unfold your t-shirt so that it lies flat in front of you. Then pinch in the middle and roll the shirt so it wraps around itself. It was a bit difficult for my daughters, I did this step for them. But with a little practice, I think they’ll get the hang of it in no time.
Then wrap the rubber band around the folded shirt. Then add some rubber bands that go the other way around the shirt so it doesn’t come undone. This method gives the shirt a traditional spiral look, but if you want to learn other methods, I recommend reading Stephanie Lynn’s blog post on other ways to twist ties.
I read another guide where they recommended adding 8 drops of food coloring to 1/2 C of water. We mixed it up at first, but the colors seemed too bright. So we doubled the drops of food coloring.

You need to mix 16 drops food coloring: 1/2 C water we poured it all into our squeeze bottles and shook them. I didn’t know how much food coloring: water solution we were going to use because we had 3 layers and we had to fill a red bottle and a blue bottle.
Then start spraying the food coloring solution. If you don’t pre-wash your shirt, you may have problems getting the liquid into your shirt. It was us! So we cleaned our shirts with a spray bottle of water, and after that it soaked up the food coloring water.
Continue spraying the solution until your shirt looks like the picture below. Again, it’s our first time here, but it worked for us, so we recommend ;)!
How To Dye Fabrics Using The Washing Machine
Other tutorials we read said to soak the cloth in salt water after applying the food coloring mixture. After a few hours, remove it and let it sit for at least 12 hours…but we didn’t! We were pressed for time and it was a fun experience to get our feet wet with the whole tie-dye experience. But we leave our shirts on for 24 hours, mostly because we have a million other things to do.
Wrap your shirt in place with rubber bands, put it in a plastic bag and roll the bag tightly, squeezing out all the air. Let sit for at least 12 hours.
Once seated, take it out and hang it inside to dry, away from sunlight. Once dry, you can immediately put on your tie-dye caramel coat.
Diy Magical, Color Changing Food Coloring
My girls cut and packed their shirts beautifully. The middle two even used some of their scraps to make fun caps to match their shirts!
As I said above, this method is not permanent. It is washed off. But testing the tie waters was a lot of fun for the girls. Look how cute they are!! BTW, the youngest of the four girls wanted no part of it all… life with a newborn!
In my opinion, this is the best way for kids to experiment with tie dyeing. They can do so many folding and folding techniques and if they don’t like it, it is washed right away. And if they find a technique they like, they can try their hand at permanent things.

Tie dyeing is a popular warm weather craft with beautiful and colorful results. While this is fun for all ages, some parents may be concerned about using clothing dyes around young children. Fortunately, fabric dyeing can be combined with food dyeing. While the results won’t be as bright and vibrant as dress dyeing, the process is still fun and a great introduction to tie dyeing.

Food coloring is a simple and safe alternative to using regular fabric dyes. For best results, start with items made from white fabrics that take acid dyes easily, such as wool, silk or nylon. To prepare the clothes for dying, pour equal amounts of water and white vinegar into a large bowl or bucket.
