Today I’m going to walk you through the exact steps and formula for dyeing Easter eggs with food coloring to create over 40 shades!

And that’s just the beginning. You can use the formulas I share below, along with other egg dyeing and drying tips, and build them to create endless colors!

All food coloring is not created equal. You will notice that there are two types: liquid and gel food coloring. However, the type of “gel” seems to vary widely.

Wilton food coloring gels worked well though and that’s what I chose to use, you can usually find them at Amazon, Target, craft or grocery stores. I used their classic cover and neon cover to create the colors you see in this post.

Regular food coloring from any grocery store works just as well. However, the colors usually come in the “standard” colors of blue, red, yellow and green. Fortunately, you can still make several of the colors below with it!

How To Make Natural Food Coloring

I found another gel food coloring, the kind with a small white tube, is not suitable for coloring as it does not dissolve in water and vinegar. So avoid them if possible!

You don’t have to hard boil your eggs to dye them, but if you’re doing this with kids, I highly recommend it. It’s less messy if there’s a crack!

To hard boil, place a dozen eggs under a large saucepan and add water, covering the eggs. Bring the water to a boil over medium heat. When it boils, cover and remove from heat. Leave for 10-12 minutes, then remove from pan and rinse or soak in cold water.

Follow the instructions below that show how long it takes to hatch each egg to get the different colors. You can of course vary this time, but also mix colors to create more colors in your eggs!

Although your colors will be more limited, you can dye brown eggs with white eggs! The color becomes deeper, smoother and more beautiful.

Brown eggs tend to be more varied in color (i.e. many different shades of brown) to begin with, which means that the brown egg formula I share below may not produce the same results depending on the shade of the egg. . With brown eggs, check the egg often as the color develops!
