Do you love composting but find that things don’t always go to plan? Well, we have great news for you guys… I did a thing, guys! ! ! ! ! ! I dyed my own yarn :O…..I’ve always wanted to do this and finally took the plunge. Honestly, this is one of the funniest things I’ve ever tried. If you’re at all curious, I highly recommend checking it out! Trying it doesn’t mean you have to be a full blown yarn dyer, but how cool is it to make something with yarn you’ve dyed yourself.

I live in a small apartment with very limited kitchen space, so I opted to dye my yarn with food safe dyes. This means I don’t have room for new pots, pans, and tools to use the acid dye (unless you go the food safe dye route, you can’t reuse any items you dye in your cooking).

How To Dye Your Hair With Kool Aid

I’ve done a lot of research and there are so many food safe dyes to choose from, trust me you won’t feel limited at all. I decided to start with basic gel food coloring and figured if I liked it, next time I’d try more fun coloring (eg candy, Kool-Aid, etc.). I bought a pack of 10 bottles of gel food coloring from Wilton on Amazon for about $10 CAD.

So, where do you find dyed yarn? ! ? ! I looked around and compared prices, and my choice fell on a stain supplier. I love that they have a sample skein option so I can try out various yarns and then when I like it I can go back and buy a 5-pack in bulk. Shipping is a bit pricey, but that’s the story of my life in Canada lol. If anyone knows a good raw yarn supplier in Canada, please let me know! However, if you’re willing to pay for shipping or happen to live in the US, and you get free shipping on orders over $175, I highly recommend Dyer Supplier. If you want to give them a chance, here’s a link to get 20% off your order (if you buy through this link, I’m sure I’ll get a discount on my next order!)

Now, as a side note, since I didn’t know in advance what that meant – Superwash means it has been treated and can be put in the washing machine, ie no hand washing required!

Tips To Help Protect Color Treated Hair & Keep It Looking Fabulous

2) While it was soaking, I set up my stain station by dropping a garbage bag to protect my kitchen counter and laying down some plastic wrap.

4) Once my yarn is soaked, I gently squeeze out the excess water (never twist your yarn!)

5) Then I just dip the yarn into the dye vat, sprinkle different colors with a fork, etc. i just had a good time

6) Then I wrapped the yarn in plastic wrap and microwaved on high for 2 minutes, let it sit for 2 minutes, then microwaved on high for another 2 minutes, then cooled completely.

8) I hang mine on the balcony to dry for a few hours (otherwise my cats will eat them) and then bring them indoors at night to dry completely.

I’ve actually placed a larger order with the dye supplier and can’t wait to try more. Am I going to be a full fledged dyer…atm no but I’ll sell a lot of yarn and I’ll dye next because I don’t need it lol but I really like dying. So keep an eye out for one-of-a-kind hand-dyed KGC yarns coming soon on Etsy! So many “questions” popping up in my head 🙂

Just put the eggs in the whisk and dip in your desired color. No more confusion! Also, to prevent soiling, consider having children wear old clothes or protective clothing and cover the table. We have had great success coloring eggs outside when the weather is nice.

Can you get vibrant colors with plain old food coloring? Yes, plain alley food coloring is the dye we use on our Easter eggs! My daughter especially loves the neon food coloring.

Some people mix the dye in boiling or very hot water. If you don’t have young kids, feel free to try this, but for us, the trick was to let the eggs sit in the solution long enough, at least 15 minutes, to get a saturated color.

Use gel paste paints available at craft stores for a more vibrant effect. You’re more likely to find them in the store near the bakeware than in the baking and condiment aisle.

What if you run out of white vinegar when you’re done with everything? The purpose of adding vinegar to the water and dye is to help the dye bind to the eggshell. You can still dye eggs without them, but the colors won’t be as vibrant.

You can substitute lemon or lime juice in the same proportions listed above for the vinegar. You can also use vitamin C powder or crush vitamin C tablets and add to the water and dye solution.
