In this activity, students must choose three linear equations from each column and graph. In the first column there are vertical lines, in the second column there are horizontal lines, in the third column the positive slope lines appear and in the last column the negative slope lines appear. Students can choose which lines they want to write. Each student can create a different stained glass window. This is a nice activity to review the slope section shape.

### How To Graph Linear Equations Using The Intercepts Method: 7 Steps

In this activity, students must write the equation of a line from a graph and then algebraically manipulate the equation so that it becomes Ax + By = C. Students can use any personal strategy or method to write the equation of each line. The student could use slope, intercepts, function matrix, or the slope-intercept form. Students must also choose the correct representation of the equation of the line from a list of four options. TRANSFORM changes that could align with this activity include moving from summative to formative assessment and moving from one-size-fits-all to individualized or differentiated.

Each person draws three ships on the grid. Ships can be placed horizontally or vertically but not diagonally. To score a hit, write an equation in slope intercept form that passes through a point occupied by an enemy ship. You cannot use vertical or horizontal lines. The winner is the player who sinks the opponent’s ships first. Mathematical processes that apply to the Battleship Game include communication, problem solving, logic and mental math, and estimation. This year I taught systems of equations right after Christmas break. My students struggled. I think I need to do a two-day review of graphing equations before moving on to next year.

First, we talked about what a “system” of equations actually is. We also talked about the three types of solutions they can have and how they look graphically. At the bottom of the page I have included a magic book that replaces points in a system to determine if it was a solution. The file is corrupted so I will do it again for next year. Yes.

Then we solved systems of equations using graphs. I gave the students a step-by-step list for their workbooks that included an example. Next year, I think I’ll include a drill and kill practice sheet on the corresponding page.

The next day, we solved systems of equations by substitution. I used the same step-by-step list with a sample format from the day before. This worked well and I liked the way it underlined what we were replacing in each equation.

On the next page, I had a practice sheet. Whenever I substituted in an equation, I highlighted the substitution. Showing this helped my visual learners A LOT. I have also started doing word problems. They kind of hated me for it. đź™‚

I spent the next day revising and showing them what the special cases looked like algebraically. There is no nice fold for this page.

I continued to follow the same format for solving systems of equations by elimination. I had a step by step list with an example for their notebooks. This time I highlighted the “stacked” variables. I was trying to point out to them that they need to make sure they are combining the same variables.

We had several days of revision and when I was sure my students got it right, I brought out the big gunsâ€¦ MORE WORD PROBLEMS. I used legal paper to make a giant hamburger book. He gave us plenty of space to solve all the problems. My students complained loudly that they were going to die. No word on trouble-related deathsâ€¦yet.

Adapted from Laine Sutherland Designs Much of what we teach in eighth grade math seems to prepare our students to solve systems of linear equations. Understanding what a linear equation represents in its many forms helps students see what they are doing with a system of equations. Graphing a system of equations shows students the most visual representation. It also lends itself to using real situations so students can put them into context. Today I’m sharing with you 11 activities that help students understand how to solve systems of equations by graphing them.

I find that students need a lot of practice with line graphing before they acquire the skills to draw two lines. Line plotting has many small capabilities at its core, such as positive and negative slope, what to do when the equation is not in slope-intercept form, and what to do when there is no x or y variable. Students need so much repetition with all of this, and it can take a while to get comfortable. But don’t worry: to help you out, I’ve prepared a list of activities that will get your students practicing from the basics to an applied problem.

You will find that the activities have a variety of uses and you will not have time to use them all. They work for different parts of the lesson and also for different parts of a unit. Most of these work well as revision activities later in the year to jog students’ memories. Let’s take a look at these great activities.

### Stained Glass Slope Graphing Linear Equations Slope Intercept Form â€” Activity After Math

Students need a lot of practice drawing the lines before they all seem to click. One way I like to get students to practice is with Whose line is it? practice sheets. Cute animals and graphics add some fun to students’ practice. I even like to discuss with the students what kind of animal some of the pictures are. I love how eighth graders can discuss anything. If you use it at the beginning of the year, you can bring it back a few months later and repeat it. I created a second set of these hands-on graphic design activities because my students needed even more practice. If you can spread the practice out over a few weeks, it seems to sink in better.

To get students to practice multiple times with little setup, I like to use Smart Pals (dry erase sleeve) to have the whole class practice line art. I don’t know what I would do without Smart Pals. They work great as a quick formative assessment and a practical tool for just about anything. I made sure all the teachers at my school had access! They serve so many purposes and work great for practicing linear graphs and systems of equations.

This graphing practice page is designed to allow students enough space to write the equation or equations and then graph them. On one of the sides there is space to write the solution. This means everyone’s response will be in the same place and it’s easy for you to check the whole room at once. It works great as a sponge activity because you can just pick it up and start practicing.

I think this heavy business is systems of equations with graphs on training wheels. When students practice these examples, there are these little characters on the map. They guide students to where the lines should be. If a student’s lines don’t go through a mole, then they know they’ve faked it. It serves as a perfect scaffolding for students when they are first practicing because it has that extra support.

This puzzle gives students the ability to write systems of equations and find the solution. Students complete 12 problems and for each answer add a letter to the answer to the puzzle. The puzzle just adds to the fun. System problems involve some equations that are not in slope-intercept form. Also, there are some fractions and negative numbers as well. It gives students good practice in a class period.
