We realized that with the right tools and a little practice, anyone can learn how to frost cakes. It may seem scary at first, but it’s easy and the more you try, the better you’ll get.

Perfect Cream Cheese Frosting
To decorate cakes with a piping bag you will need three things: (1) a decorating bag; (2) the fifth tip; and (3) freezing. I know some people use ziplock bags to sing in the snow, but that didn’t work for me. If I’m doing a quick squiggle I use it, but for something that requires more precision, I always make a ready-made bag. There are reusable and disposable bags. Choose the one that is best for you. (Note: Disposable bags can be reused.)
Choose your frosting tip: My favorites are the Wilton 1M Decorating Tip and the Wilton 2D Decorating Tip. 2D is the closed surface of the star, so the ice must be very smooth to pass through. 1M almost no failure.
Fold over the decorative bag. I have seen people put a bag in a glass and fold the bag over the side of the glass to fill it. I found it easy to fold the sides in my hands.

Grab a bag and start spooning in your frosting. Most of the time you can get all the frosting in the bag, but this makes it difficult to use. Fill the inner half until you get a swirling sound.
Tie it last. This is an important step because if you’re not careful, the frost can end. I bought these amazing movies at Ikea. They have been fulfilled. Amazon also sells this Ikea Ceiling Clipson.
Place the frosting on the outer edge of the cake. Move the frosting around the outer edge of the cake in a clockwise direction. When you’ve made a full circle, start the next circle on top of the one you’ve already made, making each circle smaller as you go. Finish with a little growth on the top of the cake. Learn how to make frosted cupcakes with this easy step-by-step tutorial. You’ll be a piping pro in no time with these easy frosting cake tips! One thing I get asked a lot about, is how to make frosted cookies. I have wanted to post about this for a while, but I wanted to make a good post, which would be good information to get back to. I hope this post will be a good resource for you. I remember when I first started decorating cupcakes I was so excited (and scared) to make a beautiful swirl on the cupcakes. After a few moments I found that filling the bag and adding the frosting to the cakes was easier and faster than spreading the frosting!
In order for the frosting to hold the body well enough (be thick enough), you need to freeze it well to begin with. Be sure not to add too much water or your ingredients will become too hot. I wouldn’t recommend using canned frosting (pre-made) to frost the cakes, it’s usually not dry enough to handle. I’ve heard of people adding powdered sugar to canned frosting to thicken it up… but if you do, it’s easy to make your own.
Gingerbread Cupcakes With Vanilla Cream Cheese Frosting
I’ve posted recipes for American buttercream and cream cheese frosting, the two frostings I use most often. Swiss meringue buttercream (as described by Rosie from Sweetapolita) also makes a piping-friendly frosting.
To frost the cups, you’ll want to use a large (sometimes called jumbo) frosting. The four most common (open) formats are shown above. Wilton 1M and 2D are usually available at craft stores, some of which you may need to purchase online. I like to use a coupler to keep my tips in place, you will need a larger coupler for these tips. Large tips can be used without a coupler, just put the tip inside the bag, and then fill it with frost.
And the big finale…my first video! Simple and obvious, but I think sometimes it’s helpful to just see the process from start to finish. Have fun!

Be encouraged. No, my readings are not dirty, yes the tip is purple… this is the color of the tip. My kitchen (and counter) is original to my house, which was built in 1958. They are old.
