Getting a deep, dark color requires a lot of liquid food. So while the color below isn’t too dark, it’s as dark as I recommend going when using liquid food coloring or you’ll start to taste it. For this test, I used McCormick Assorted Liquid Food Coloring.
Water Food Color: 24 drops blue + 32 drops green + 4 drops yellow + 1/2 cup buttercream

The easiest way to mix the food coloring is to pour the frosting into a bowl and mix with a spoon or rubber spatula until all the clouds are mixed. It’s easier to hold the bowl in one hand and shake it with the other, rather than trying to mix while the bowl is on the counter. Make sure to remove all the mold from the bottom of the jar, to make sure no white residue is left.
If you’re trying to get an overall green color, stick the toothpick in the food processor (instead of throwing it away). This allows you to add a little more detail and fine-tune the color. For a simple green cookie, check out my Christmas Cookie Recipe.

When we think of sage, we think of the green/grey, as the name suggests, sage leaf. The problem is that when we mix colors, they tend to be a shade lighter or darker than we want or need. Next, let’s talk about different ways to achieve the perfect shade of green.
Sage is a green, earthy color. It is not a single color, but a term to describe a family of colors. Shades like pistachio green, avocado green, eucalyptus green, or olive green.
People have their own names for all these colors of green. If you’re making dessert for a customer and they ask for dessert, it’s a good idea to show them both options so you’re both on the same page.

Knowing that sage is another green we know that yellow and blue are some of its ingredients. However, wiser as gray than true green, we can confirm that there is more yellow than blue. From there we can start coloring our colors with a few drops of yellow and then below the blue until we have a green color. To get the most out of it, it is recommended to use a little red, red, or gray.
The key to achieving good color is to start with a small amount, then after coloring it, even if it seems to lighten what we want, if we wrap the shadow and let the color develop for a few hours it will darken.
