There are different types of cocoa powder: regular and Dutch processed cocoa. Both are usually unsweetened. Regular cocoa powder is lighter brown than Dutch processed cocoa because Dutch cocoa is alkalized and less acidic than regular cocoa powder.
If we are out of cocoa and brown gel food coloring at the same time, it is possible to mix the colors we already have and create the shade of brown we need.
To start creating our shades of brown, we need to understand the color wheel. In color theory, brown is achieved by mixing equal amounts of
Words For The Color Orange
When we talk about the color wheel, we start with the primary colors yellow, blue and red. Next come the secondary colors. These colors are made by combining the first. Yellow and blue make green, blue and red make purple and red and yellow make orange. By arranging these colors on a base color, we have yellow and purple, blue and orange, and red and green as complementary colors. This means they are opposite each other on the color wheel.
With exactly the same number of drops of each of these combinations you get a shade of brown. By changing the number of drops for each color you can get darker or lighter colors.
When using our gel color set, we recommend a combination of Royal Red Velvet and Gourmet Green, but there are other color combinations that result in brown. See the diagram below.

To get a deeper shade of brown, we recommend adding a bit of the main color as opposed to the complementary combination. For instance:
It is also recommended to use different shades of colors to get more varieties of brown shades. Adding Brick Red gel food coloring instead of Royal Red Velvet for example, or using other shades of green we wear (Succulent Green, Forest Green) instead of Gourmet Green, Ultra Blue or Mermaid Teal instead of True Blue create a variation on previous combinations. My friends make fun of me because I always make sure we have fruits and vegetables in all our gatherings. I have a very practical approach to healthy eating and part of that is having healthy food available when the kids decide they are hungry. I’m a big fan of everyone sitting around the dinner table and enjoying the same meal together, but realize that can be somewhat of a challenge.
The Rainbow Diet: Eat The Rainbow Food Lists By Colour
For this project I wanted to make eating fun again and I wanted to make trying new foods exciting! I decided to break the food down by color. My oldest already knows his colors, but this is a great way to introduce colors to young children. And how fun it is to have an entire dinner made of food in your favorite color! We are currently working on letters and color spelling is a great way to start recognizing letters. We do a different color every night for a week, but you can do one color a week or even one a month. The best part about this is that there are many foods in every color (well except blue, blue is hard) but you can choose foods that you know your kids will eat with a few that might be a little off are their comfort zone. Click on the links below to learn more about what we do with each food coloring. I also teamed up with my fellow “Farmwife” blogger friends to make additional drinks, desserts and crafts for each color.
