Pipe ends can seem intimidating, so let’s break them down in this easy pipe 101 tutorial. It takes a little practice, visual direction, and a really reliable frosting recipe, like my heavy cream, vanilla cream or this not-so-sweet frosting . I stick to the following 5 plumbing tips. Each one has a completely different look, making it an amazing first collection. (And these tips won’t break the bank—they’re all pretty cheap.)

I did TWO looks with the Wilton 1M. I use and recommend this tip for two-tone roses, but I also use this tip to create soft swirls as shown in the video tutorial above.

Wilton 1M is the classic piping tip and the buttercream rose is the basic decoration. Start in the center and roll into a flat swirl. You can see this beautiful rose decoration on this 6 inch birthday cake. You can also make two colored roses. They are beautiful and so much fun to play with different colors. And to further prove the versatility of the Wilton 1M, you can also use it to make hydrangea cupcakes! This is a piping tip that I always recommend as a baking gift, and it’s featured on my Best Gifts for Bakers page. 🙂

Wilton 1M can also make a decoration reminiscent of soft ice cream. Start in the middle and move slowly, creating a long vortex above you. The Ateco 849 pipe end (also listed below) is slightly wider but gives the same look. I used Wilton 1M to pipe the long cakes on these chocolate cupcakes.

Wilton 8B is an all-time favorite. It is very easy to use, but it creates a beautiful decoration. You can see me using it in these white chocolate strawberry shortcakes and these chai latte cupcakes. Start in the middle and work your way up.

Ateco 849 is the only wide pipe. You can make a rose or a gentle swirl, like the Wilton 1M above. (Since this tip is wider, the rose and swirl will be wider/longer. You can use an Ateco 849 to get a wider, longer swirl on these yellow cupcakes and these peanut butter cupcakes.) Or you can create a simple swirly look. like the one below. next picture. You can also see the delicious look on mypistachio cookies! Simply press the tip into the center and lift it up as you squeeze out the frost.

The Wilton 12 is a small round tip. Since it doesn’t have detailed edges, I like to use this tip to make soft/thin/creamy frostings like Salted Caramel Frosting and Cream Cheese Frosting. You can see an example of this in my blackberry lemon cream cake. Simply press the tip into the center and lift it up as you squeeze out the frost.

Ateco 808 is also a round tip, but it is much bigger than Wilton 12. Its decoration looks like a big bright cloud! You can see examples for yourself in these Carrot Cake Cupcakes and these Cookie Dough Cupcakes. Start in the middle and work your way up.

Choose reusable or disposable, whichever you prefer. Reusable piping bags are very easy to clean. Whatever you use, I recommend the 16 inch size. The bigger the size, the more or less we decorate.

It can be hard to fill a piping bag with frosting without making a mess! My trick is to use a large mug. Insert the piping bag with the piping tip, and place it in a large cup, folding the top of the piping bag around the edge of the cup. Watch how I do this in my Two Tone Frosted Rose video.
