After the Israelites had been traveling in the desert for several weeks, the food they had brought from Egypt ran out. There were no shops. There were no fields or trees to buy food. Then people started complaining about the food. What did all those people eat in the barren desert? Instead of trusting in God, they began to complain and grumble. God knows they will need food. Moses prayed for help. [Moses prays.] Then God told Moses that He would send bread from heaven for the people to eat. A strange thing happened at night when people were sleeping. [Have the children lie down and close their eyes. Spread soaked rice grains or poppy seeds on a piece of brown “desert” cloth.] In the morning, white sheets were placed on the ground around the entire camp. [The children open their eyes and stand up.] The Israelites had never seen anything like this. “What is this?” People asked. Moses said: “This is the bread that God has given you to eat.” When people ate it, it looked like honeydew. People called it manha, which means “what is this?” Moses said to the people: “Every morning you will find a man on the ground.” Get up in the morning and collect enough for the day, but don’t keep anything overnight.

But some people did not listen to Moses. They tried to save some manna for the next day so they wouldn’t have to gather more. The next morning their manna burned and stank. Some people were lazy and didn’t gather enough throughout the day. But when the sun rose, it melted, and the people continued their hunger until the morning. On Friday, Moses told the people to collect enough manna for two days because there would be no manna on the Sabbath. But some people did not listen to Moses. Every night the extra food went bad. They thought Friday night would be bad. But on Friday night the manna did not spoil, and on the Sabbath there was no manna on the ground. Those who did not collect enough on Friday for two days went hungry on Saturday. By the end of the first week, everyone knew they had to follow God’s instructions. As long as they gathered enough manna each morning for the whole day, the food was satisfying. And every Friday they had to collect enough money for two days. When the Israelites followed God’s instructions, they received fresh food every day. God met their needs. He gave them enough food to eat in the wilderness. God provides for our needs.
