Mo Willems Elephant And Piggie Set – Concept and innovation in Early Childhood Education and Care is a think tank based in Watertown Massachusetts founded in 2018 by Theodore (Teddy) Kokoros. All researchers and consultants and innovators in early childhood education and care are educators of children or parents. Although early childhood education and care receive a lot of attention from politicians and the media, most are not the most honest people involved in the work that creates policies and discussions around education and child care. The purpose of this perspective is to share research and insights from those who work directly with children.
In my 15 years as a pre-K teacher, the best picture book I came across was Mo Willems’s Ali and Piggy. These books are fun, sometimes emotional, help build early reading comprehension and decision making, and help children learn social and emotional skills. All books are great, but which one is the best? Below is my ranking of all 25 elephant and pig books counting down to book #1 with a little commentary from 1-15.
Mo Willems Elephant And Piggie Set
15. Waiting is not easy! (November 2014) The starry night on the last page is one of the most unique of the entire series.
Elephant & Piggie
14. I invite you to the party! (July 2007): The big twist ends when we learn that Piggy actually knows the similarities…
12. Should I share my ice cream? (June 2011) Sharing is difficult for everyone; But especially for children. This led to a lot of discussion on the topic.
11. I love my new toys! (June 2008): When both the elephant and Piggy cry when the toy breaks, it’s like preschoolers not only cry when someone is upset, but also when they are upset with someone else .

9. Thank You Book (May 2016): The last book in the series. This is like the end of Seinfeld where all the old characters come back but unlike a Seinfeld episode, it’s good.
8. I will sleep! (June 2015) When Piggie is head-butting, we get the opposite of the whole series.
6. Are you ready to play outside? (October 2008) Changing thoughts about Piggy Rain and the elephant’s desire to find pleasure in his friend is a distraction.
Children’s Books (grades Prek 3)
5. The Big Man Got My Ball (May 2013) The look on Piggy’s face when he realizes the elephant didn’t get the ball back is the look every woman gets when she realizes some husband proud people in his life did not live. it. personal happiness. The vertigo with the sad whale finally teaches the children to empathize
4. We are in a book! (September 2010): A great meta book that teaches kids about how books work. BJ Novak’s The Book Without Pictures can be a great example of this.
3. My New Funny Friend (June 2014) This isn’t even close to the funniest, but I’d argue it’s the most confusing of the entire series as far as Aliya is concerned. that he had lost his best friend. Everyone from children to adults can relate to the stress of an elephant.

2. Can I play too? (June 2010): In this book children learn how to be a friend included, we get some criticism of the snake, which is rare in picture books, but the the best is when 100 balls hit the snake on the head. My classmates couldn’t stop laughing at each other.
(July 2007): Despite all the good books, A Bird on Your Head ranks as my favorite. Being pissed off by the bird on the elephant’s head and slowly descending into a screaming failure of heart reminds me of Ed Helms as Andy Bernard in The Office when he slowly loses his high and punch a hole in the wall.
