Here are my top five picks for good colored pencils that will give you the results you want. By “results” I mean great colors that are easy to hold, easy to use, and don’t fade on the page.

Great news? I choose them based on my own testing! None of these brands paid me or sent me anything for free. This is my 100% honest opinion.

How To Use Colored Pencils In Adult Coloring Pages

I have all of these pencil sets (and many more) and have tested them all. Of the colored pencils I tried, these were my top five picks. These are my thoughts, and here are my ratings from 1 to 5 below.

Pros: These colored pencils for adults have a great color palette; No sharpening required, you just twist! The color goes on smoothly and waxy, something between a chalk and a pencil. I love that feeling.

Cons: no inscriptions on the colors! You don’t think the marking colors are important if you don’t have them – some colors look the same so it was hard for me to remember what I used.

Overall: I am so in love with these pencils. Honestly, there are two big things I like about them: 1) the way the color goes on the page and how smooth it is, and 2) the fact that you don’t have to make it more pronounced.

Having said that, it can sometimes be difficult to get a sharp tip for detailed areas. But for me, if you want a good set at a reasonable price, this is a great option.

(About $3 to start) – This set includes 24 colored pencils; I believe this is the only size set you can buy from them.

Pros: Pencil tubes are hexagonal, making it easy to hold; The colors come out smooth and waxy just the way I like them; They are easy to mix.

Cons: The only bad thing I can say is that there are not enough colors! I wish Pantel would make bigger sets as well.

Overall: Love this set! These are the best cheap colored pencils for adults. Your only limitation will be the colors available. So whether I recommend it or not depends on your color needs. I like it better than the cheaper sets I’ve tried – I’m just sad I can’t get it in more colors or this would be my set!

(starts at about $19.99) – Prismacolor pencils aren’t cheap, but I picked up a set of 72 anyway. They come in different sizes.

Pros: What can I say other than Prismacolors are gorgeous? Easy to align, moves smoothly. . . They are good at walking the markers and the markers are walking them.

Cons: To me, Prismacolors are like Copic markers in the pencil world. They are expensive. Having said that, the quality is there! I felt like I needed to buy a really big set to get all the colors I wanted.

Overall: It’s hard to complain about Prismacolors – they really are the best colored pencils out there, especially when it comes to coloring for adults. The price is really the only scary thing.

As far as pencils go, this is the best quality in my opinion. I have a limit to what I’m willing to spend on pencils on a regular basis, so I have a set, but I don’t use them all the time!

Professional Colored Pencils

($15.59 and up) – What is Tri-Tone Pencil? I had no idea when I bought the set of 12! You can also purchase these colored pencils for adults in sets of 24.

Cons: You’ll still need a basic set of primary colors other than this set because they are all literally as described – three colors in each pencil tip.

Overall: Man, I really like this. If you’re seriously into grown-up color and have a birthday or other holiday coming up, ask for a tri-tone color. It’s fun for them. Color effects like no other. . . But it can’t be your only set (unless you’re crazy about your color!).

Cons: Hardly any! The pencil is dusty, but unlike some others, it is easy to clean without leaving a stain.

Overall: In terms of wooden pencils that need to be sharpened, this is my favorite! They were actually recommended to me on Instagram by someone who said she had arthritis and found them comfortable, so I had to buy them. I agree; They are easy to hold. You can’t go wrong with Sargent Adult Pencils.

I enjoyed your reviews and listed the pros and cons of each one. I have read several reviews of colored pencils and I think your reviews are very honest. Some of the reviews I’ve read say that the reviewer has never used or tried the crayons they’re reviewing. There is a review that I thought was interesting and it was on the YouTube app. If you go to search and type in “colored pencil reviews” you will see all kinds of video reviews. But what I really liked was Coloring Bliss. She tested 30 different brands of colored pencils and ranked the 10 best and 10 worst brands. It will blow your mind! I got some great results, especially the top three. She was also very scientific in her testing and really used pencils.

I only use Crayola and Sargent Art, but the Prismacolor Premier looks really interesting and would be a welcome addition to my collection. Never tried it before, but I’ve read a lot of good reviews about it. Thanks for sharing. =D

I’m a big fan of Sargent Art crayons myself, I bought a box of 36 crayons at Walmart and then ordered a box of 120 which unlike my Crayola crayons doesn’t have 120 different colors but gives you more variety than 36 and you get 2 or more of the same. 3 get them to last longer than one of each in the box

I draw to relax. Although I guess I’m not “artist” enough to see the difference, I do have a few favorites. I like Sinostar which comes in cans of 72 for about 20.00. They are comparable to Prisma Colors which I don’t know as I haven’t tried Prisma. The blend is great and they have the perfect skin tone too. Called Soft Core, all I know is that I love them. Sorry, I forgot to tell you that they are on Another choice is Crayola Twistable, a very brightly colored twistable. I love my new hobby! Relax and paint!

I have a 24 piece set from Crayola, a 50 piece set from Sargent and some Prismacolors. I can use all 3 varieties on a piece depending on the color I choose to work with. My favorite is Prismacolor, hands down. They move around the image and the colors become brighter and deeper. I just love the feel of using it. In the end, I will appreciate the full 150 piece set, but yes, the price is a deterrent. My second choice is Sgt. I draw for stress relief and use my ready-made designs for gifts, many of which are purely personal and some of which are custom made. I am looking for a local class to learn more techniques.
