Photoshop Make Black And White

Photoshop Make Black And White – Ever since photography began to develop as an artistic medium, we have been fascinated by the power of black and white images. They have an undeniable beauty and grace that transcends reality to give us something deeper. Every photographer wants to play with this amazing style at some point.

But how do you do it right? There’s definitely a fine line between taking a plain old black and white photo and creating something truly stunning. Here are some tips to help you take a monochrome photo.

How To Make An Image Black And White In Photoshop

It might seem strange that our first tip is not to do something, but there’s a good reason for that! When you use your camera’s black and white mode to shoot, you actually remove a lot of options from the image. Its camera can capture the full spectrum of tones and recreate things close to life. Limiting it to just black, white, and shades of gray removes a huge amount of functionality from the device.

Your DSLR is designed for color, so it works best. Simply put, you can take a better color photo. But if that’s not reason enough for you, we’ll have to look at the post-production process next. When you edit an image and convert it to a black and white file, you have several options to modify and adjust the image. You can darken the darkest areas, lighten the lightest areas, or vice versa. You can also set the display mode of the black and white image. To do this, choose which color is the darkest or lightest in the image.

If your photo doesn’t have pre-registered color tones, it removes many of the available editing options. Also, since shooting with a camera doesn’t provide the contrast or balance you need for your image, you still need to edit. Black and white photography does not save time and can limit the possibilities of the final image. Basically, no problem: stay away from black and white in the camera!

Then you can decide how to convert the image to black and white in Photoshop. There are several options available to you, which we will explore here.

The Hue and Saturation tool is very easy to use if you don’t want an overly contrasty look. Here, all you have to do is open the tool and slide down the “Saturation” bar. Likewise, the image is black and white. It’s a great tool because it’s non-destructive: changes are made on a new layer instead of touching the original file. This means that if you make a mistake, you can go back and change or delete it. However, this does not allow proper control of the tone of the image. You can change the darkness and lightness of individual colors, but this can be cumbersome, causing parts of the image to become pixelated or clearly hidden again.

Photoshop Actions are a great way to quickly create black and white images as they can be batch edited to edit multiple photos at once. There’s a black and white Photoshop action called “Modest Silver” from the Everyday Workflow Essentials Photoshop Actions Collection that’s perfect for this.

Black & White Conversion In Lightroom

Photoshop also has a black and white tool that is used specifically for black and white conversion. Click on the tool here and it will reopen on a new layer. This tool gives you more control as you can adjust the brightness of each color by adjusting individual sliders. These changes may not be enough to create the desired contrast without the image looking weird, so you should always use the Curves tool.

Finally, you can use the gradient map, which is my favorite. It layers a contrast gradient over the image, and Photoshop has a built-in black-and-white gradient. You can adjust the gradient editor sliders to increase contrast/brightness.

You can play with different options and even mix different looks. Adding the dodger and burner is a great addition on top of the new black and white image for an even more spectacular image. The possibilities are endless!

Reasons To Photograph Black And White Images In Color First

All that editing will be for naught if you don’t have a good photo to start with. Not all shots will look good in black and white. For example, some images require color for clarity. Imagine a sports fan wearing a shirt with his country’s flag on the back and his team’s colors. The significance of her clothes is completely lost in black and white. You want your image to tell a strong story without needing color to provide context.

What works best in monochrome? Portraits are a very strong example of this. A narrowly cropped headshot with very sharp focus on the eyes and soft focus elsewhere will always look absolutely stunning in black and white. Silhouettes can look great even in monochrome, and if you’re trying to emphasize artistic or cultural aspects, black and white can add the gravitas you need. It can also be a good choice for a few select wedding images, although it’s generally a good idea to leave most of the stock in color.

Personally, if I know in advance that I want black and white, I shoot with film. However, sometimes the only option is to convert the digital color image in post. The most common way to convert images to black and white is to use a black and white adjustment layer in Lightroom, Camera Raw, or Photoshop.

Dinda’s tutorial from PiXimperfect Unmesh shows another rather novel way to create black and white transitions. This involves using Photoshop’s ‘Calculate’ feature to look at the different color channels in the image. Different mixing methods are used to produce a wide variety of options.

The first step is to load the color image into Photoshop. Then select “Calculate” from the “Image” menu. The key to using this method is that the “Preview” box is checked. Otherwise, when you change the settings, you will have no idea what the settings are doing.

That’s not the only thing the Calculations tab does. But in this context, you need to make sure that both “source” options are set to the same image file. If they come from different files, you will get completely unpredictable results.

If you are working with a single flat image layer, you must also select the “Background” layer for each image. If you’re doing this on a file with multiple or multiple layers, there’s a “merge” option that looks at the entire (original) flat image.

Each blend mode offers a different look. Soft lighting brings the least contrast, hard lighting the most, while overlap gives something in the middle. Lighting and Screen increase the brightness of the image, while Darkness and Multiply decrease the brightness.

Which one you go with is a matter of personal taste. There is no “best” choice, just what works for you and the image you’re working with. If you like a lot of contrast, you may find the lighting harsh
