1  And the voice of the whole congregation cried out; and the people wept that night. 2 And all the children of Israel lamented against Moses and against Aaron, and the whole congregation said to them: Oh, that we had died in the land of Egypt! Oh, if we had perished in this desert! 3 Why did the Lord bring us to this land to fall by the sword: our women and children will remain a prey? Is it not good for us to return to Egypt?

Israel did not lack assurance that the Lord could and would fight their battles for them if they would put their faith in Him. He showed them his power many times. One day he told about 10 miracles he had done for them while they were in Egypt. How many times does he want to show them his love until they want to believe in him and believe in that love?

These people lived according to the requirements of the gospel for more than four hundred years during their slavery in Egypt. Now the Lord wanted to show them something powerful, a better way of life. He wanted them to find happiness and security in His covenants. He had already tried to give them the fullness of the gospel, but their love of idols and worldly things demanded that He give them one less law to live by. It seems that all the efforts He made to bless them were thwarted by their reluctance to accept His goodness. They were satisfied with the way they were, and they were not interested in making the necessary changes to receive the greater blessings that the Lord wanted to give them.
